Events - Culture Arts Crafts
The culture of the Western North Carolina mountains has been rooted in the Scotch-Irish, Native American, and African American experience for generations. First the Cherokee, then a trickle – later a flood – of Scots and Irish settlers, then African Americans both free and enslaved – created a unique mountain culture throughout the Appalachians and Blue Ridge mountains surrounding Weaverville.
Those cultural bonds shaped the arts and crafts, the patterns and designs of baskets and woven goods, of house building and farming practices, of glass blowing and pottery and metalwork. Many of the region’s finest craftsmen and craftswomen have no “formal training” – other than the deep and formal learning provided by mothers and fathers, grandparents, great-grandparents, and other master craftspeople.
Studios in and around Weaverville and throughout the region, along hidden byways (see Handmade in America’s guidebook), or in public spaces like the Folk Art Center on the Blue Ridge Parkway, show that mountain crafts are not just a product, but a way of life that reflects a deep and abiding passion for precise and exacting tradition.
Crafts and cultural festivals also celebrate WNC's diverse heritage. Explore the site for more seasonal details.
